Here’s some more train drawings – not up to date, as these were done on the London tube and as I’ve mostly been on the New York subway of late, not really reflecting my personal circumstances. (I haven’t got around to scanning those drawings yet though.) But more on that in another blog post, further down the line. As I use this place as essentially a record of my doodles and drawings (plus the occasional news announcement and recommendation), and as I’ve been writing a lot more recently, I’m toying with the idea of giving this image blog a literary twin, or at least something to accommodate the inner ramble that occasionally makes the kind of sense that might be worth sharing. Watch this space.

At the moment, I'm jet-lagged and my body clock neither knows nor seems to care what time it is. I’ve crossed I don’t know how many time zones recently, yoyo-ing between London, New York, and last week, Houston. I’m setting things up for a long-term move to Brooklyn, due to happen at the end of February. More on that in a later blog post, too.

In between all this movement, it was my pleasure to attend the Montgomery County Teen Book Fair at College Park High School down in Texas, and I had a great time. I met many of the school’s delightful students, so interested in and engaged with reading books, particularly the lovely and impressively accomplished Shirlene Obuobi, a published author herself at the tender age of 17. She is going places. Indeed, there was a great mix of YA writers attending the event, including the esteemed authors Cassandra Clare, Melissa Marr (and her lovely daughter Asia), Joy Preble, Charles J. Shields and Sara Zarr. I got to dine with Melissa, Joy and Sara on Saturday night and this is the sort of thing that makes these awaydays so much fun. You get to shoot around ideas with great like minds, other kinds of storytellers. You get to converse with the likes of Charles Shields who is currently writing a biography of Kurt Vonnegut. You get to hang out with cool people, attendees and speakers alike. I wish there was more crossover between comics/GN and YA publishing.

Special thanks to my delightful helpers, Natasha, Lizzi, Becka and Brandt (who saved my life when the cable necessary to make my slideshow lecture happen went kaput) and of course Pam and Wendy, and all the other parents and helpers – kind regards to you all if you read this. It was pleasure to meet you. Special message for Natasha: check this out.

This Thursday I’m off to the International Angoulême BD Festival. I’ll be signing French editions of Laika at the Dargaud stand from 12.00 – 2.00pm on Friday 29th January, and again from 12.30pm – 3.00pm on Saturday 30th January. Come get a ‘dédicace’.
